From shelter pup to cross-country traveler: this is the story of Thurston.

The Lycoming County SPCA is excited to announce a new blog series: following Thurston, a former Lycoming County SPCA shelter pup, and his adventurous momma as they cross the US of A in 30 days.  But first, a little backstory is in order:

In 2016, upon moving to Philadelphia, outdoorsy 23-year-old Caroline McNamara promised her Corgi shelter dog, Thurston, that he would see the Pacific Ocean if they could make it through nursing school and life in a city together.  Caroline successfully graduated this past May, turned 25, and passed her NCLEX (a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses).  To celebrate, she kept her promise to Thurston and set out on the adventure of a lifetime: seeing the USA in 30 days. Caroline describes her story below:

“If you couldn’t find me the summer of 2015, I was probably waiting at the SPCA for my perfect adventure dog to be waiting for a home. I eventually saw Thurston (formerly “Gianni”) sulking in pen 46. He looked like he was itching for an adventure.

Within a week of coming home, he had mastered hammock naps, trail blazing our hikes, and balancing on a kayak (in my kitchen – baby steps). In 2016, we set a goal of hiking 365 by the end of the year. Thurston led the way to the first New Year’s resolution I ever kept. We moved to Philadelphia at the end of 2016 for nursing school. Knowing this would put a damper on our adventures, I promised Thurston that if he stuck it out through city life we would go on a grand adventure across the country after graduation. So on June 9 we set out to bike, hike, and paddle our way to the Pacific Ocean (and drive because Corgi legs can only cover so much distance).”

Follow along with us as we cover Thurston’s story day by day!
